That part which I thought broken
is the only part that's whole.
It helped me reach beyond myself
into my very soul.

Not demon at the gate, I see
trying to get in
But a soldier gone into the breach
against oblivion

My life you risked, I hated you
you brother Caine in me
Your motto: to try everything
to set our spirits free

When I had almost lost it all
you showed yourself to be
a reflection of His love
His creativity

Then helped me take another risk,
a death defying lunge
So from your nest you pushed me out
trusting only in His love

Do I see you differently,
or is it that you've changed
Addictively you prayed for me
each Sabbath through my pain

You metamorphed each feeling
into a tool for me
With fear and shame and sadness
again you set me free

With unrelenting zeal at first,
Recovery your yoke
Responsibility and living made
addiction's pain a joke

Though I'd have never picked this life
that you have given me
clear peaceful eyes now realize
what was, was meant to be

Oh part which I thought broken
without you I'm not whole
You helped me reach beyond myself
into our very soul

I hate poetry!  Probably because I cannot write it like Poe.  And so I do not read it.

Yet, I read this.  WHy?  I do not know.  And it grabbed me!  Only one who has been there can know that.  Yes it did.  It was GOOD!

A Doctor and a damn good poet!  Thank you for this one.

I don't like poetry either, but a few people on here actually have me checking out their stuff regular now.

I love the redemption this poem conjures.

that is what I was reaching for and to make it personal. I value your support.

very kind, doc, thank you...this one came from my heart and left a tear in my eye. It demanded writing..

Don,

I like the rhythm of this. It could be song lyrics, you know? I also like that it has restorative values for your faith too. Nicely done

Thanks Maso, much appreciated. I hear the poems in my head, long before I write them. I guess, then, we've both got rhythm!

This poem also regards accepting all aspects of one's self. The Emperor's recent essay on dualism was part of the inspiration, as was my recent viewing of "East of Eden".

I like the plural thing you've got going on here, Dr. I think you've hit on something there.

I continue to be impressed by the depth of your sentiment. - Good job.

Right on, Buddah...

Yeah, lotsa pieces inside, lotsa support outside for balance. I'm never alone, as they say. Thanks Shovel.

I was thinking the same thing as I was reading it. I like the way it flows.

Very good, Dr.Don

btw ... East of Eden is a very good movie.

yeah... James Dean was the perfect Cal (ie. Cain in that)...the way I sometimes picture Shovel's persona

I loved the miniseries "Kaine & Abel" from the book by Jeffrey Archer also on the born "good" born / born "bad" theme.

Kinda like stories about getting stuck in family roles we didn't ask for.
